No, Flash programming isn't only used in creating animations or movies. Nor is it just a web designer tool to create graphical websites we now call Flash sites. It can also be a game developer's poison, but developing games using Flash of course requires a lot of knowledge on Flash programming. Not only that, for it requires knowledge on JavaScript programming and Flash game designing specifics as well.

If you've come across a Flash game, chances are you assuredly loved it! I have rarely played one that wasn't addictive and fun, such as the mysteriously enlightened Fly Guy, Baby Boom, etc. I sure hope they have one for s60 mobile phones, 'cause I want to go mobile with Flash games as well. The only problem now would be accessibility to my mobile phone's screen reader!

Thus, if you're planning to be a software developer sometime in the near future, and have your sight up for game development, then it would be better if you do some Flash games first. This would more than hone your skills in game concept-building, more so game programming. I suggest you also try your hand on Java game programming, for this would put you one step ahead of the competition!
